Any LASER or IR engineers in here?

I was just curious if anybody here knows about using LASERs for data transmissions.
I am asking because I think a consumer-level device to remotely access or send commands to action cameras is greatly doable.
Just toying with the idea of seeing action cams in underwater environtments. Standard radio, 2,4GHz and the surrounding bandwidths, just won't (literally) cut it, as the conditions are extreme compared to the surface.

Some of the limitations are mentioned in Wikipedia, although we aren't talking about great distances, just the limit of what can be seen by the camera's sensors. Remember we're talking about photography, so it's pointless to remote control a camera that can't even see the subject.
