In the end my problem cleared up (pun intended) when I shot in better lighting than close to sunset on a heavily overcast day. Same camera, same case.

Or maybe those rubber spacers are just somewhat compressed now and the lens is not in contact with the housing window any more...

Nah. I wouldn't care to guess how many days the camera has spent in the case. I usually store the camera in the case, as well use it on my helmet.

Now it is relatively cool Christmas season in SE PA USA. Metals tend to contract in cooler conditions and the lens tube is therefore shorter. If there was only very light contact between the lens and the housing during the warm season, then this shortening could be the reason why the smudged area is now disappeared from your videos.

Sulev, straight up, give it a rest.

With the camera at 57C, the air temperature is close to irrelevant.

Ok, let it be resting, as mr Henry.
Just hoped, that I managed to resolve this mystery of headlight smudges. :)

Well last night I finally got around to sorting out this little gremlin. All I did was cut the four corner sponges in half with a ruddy sharp modeling knife and, Hey Presto, no more fuzzy/un-focused spot in the middle.

And, before anyone asks, no, I did not upset the camera fitting. It still sits snug and with full use of the external buttons.

I'm glad, that you managed to fix your problem! I hope, that SJCAM would learn something and avoid poor design in the future. Many occasional blurs on videos, recordd with this camera, might be caused because the front lens touches the window of the protective case.
